State of Confusion
Things rarely work out this way. I had an idea for an essay that I thought would be perfect for The Oxford American.
I wrote the essay. I submitted it. They accepted it. And here it is. Pray for me as I attempt to
answer one of life's most confusing riddles: Is West Virginia a part of the South?

While I was writing the piece below for "Book Notes," I was also working on a new song. Digging back into the world of
Small Town Odds caused me to write the song from the perspective of Eric. Specifically, his relationship to Jill.
I recorded it here at home. And my incredibly patient friend, Sheila, was kind enough to play the cello in parts.

I was invited to write a piece for a really interesting concept called "Book Notes." It allows writers to talk about the
music that's either helped in the writing of or is featured in their books. Here's my contribution for Small Town Odds.

First Fiction meets Powell's Books
In the Fall of 2004 I had one of the top-notch experiences of my life. Right after Small Town Odds was published I was
sent out on the First Fiction Tour. Five authors travelling together. Six cities in six days. It was the most rock star
experience I've ever had. And I was actually in a rock band for six years. Here's a transcript of the five of us talking books
with one of the best book stores in the nation, Powell's Books in Portland.

interesting. Then it all got pieced together like I sat down and went on and on about myself in one, giant monologue. If
